European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
